Construction Technologies

The Heart of Ohio Consortium is proud to have been the first in Ohio to offer programs in these excellent career areas!

In school year 2010-11, the high school component of the Construction Technologies Career Field for College Tech Prep is offered at the following secondary sites:

    • Academic Acceleration Academy (AAA); Columbus, Ohio
    • Career & Technology Education Centers (C-TEC) of Licking County; Newark, Ohio
    • Delaware Area Career Center (South Campus); Delaware, Ohio
    • Eastland Career Center; Groveport, Ohio
    • Fairfield Career Center; Carroll, Ohio
    • Lancaster High School; Lancaster, Ohio
    • Lincoln High School; Gahanna, Ohio (a satellite program of Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools)
    • Pickaway-Ross CTC; Chillicothe, Ohio
    • Springfield-Clark CTC; Springfield, Ohio
A college component of the program offers four choices of associate degree programs at Columbus State Community College, Columbus, Ohio with a pathway to Ohio University Chillicothe and Lancaster Campuses for a Bachelor of Technical and Applied Science:
    • Architecture
    • Civil Engineering Technology
    • Construction Management
    • Electrical Trades Pathway
The apprenticeship component for the Electrical Trades pathway connects exclusively with the Electrical Technology Tech Prep program at Eastland Career Center, Pickaway-Ross Career & Technology Center, and Springfield-Clark Career and Technical Center. This unique pathway offers articulation with a choice of union electrician apprenticeships at The Electrical Trades Center, Columbus, Ohio:
    • Journeyman Inside Wireman
    • Journeyman Residential Wireman
    • Journeyman Installer-Technician (with Ohio State Fire Alarm Installation Certification)
Note:  The Electrical Trades pathway includes an option to complete a special associate degree at Columbus State Community College and to apply the associate degree college credit toward a Bachelor of Science degree at Franklin University.

The Bachelor of Technical and Applied Science Degree is an opportunity for a student who has completed or is completing a two-year technical degree program from an accredited community college, regional campus, or technical college who wishes to pursue a baccalaureate degree. The program provides a student with knowledge and skills to have the opportunity for advancement in a career and integrates the technical skills of the technical degree with the professional skills of courses from the bachelor’s degree courses. The BTAS degree utilizes 96 hours of associate degree credit, of which 36-45 hours must be in a technical field.

About the Construction Technologies Curriculum

  • Ohio Career Fields Technical Content Standards are the blueprint for this 2+2 program.  To see the current State CFTCSs for Construction Technologies, visit http://www.techprepohio.net/
  • The consortium construction curriculum review took place in September 2008. The next consortium curriculum review will take place in 2012.

Articulation

Articulation with postsecondary education is now available from two consortium partners:

  • Columbus State Community College has articulation agreements for certain College Tech Prep programs by which high school graduates may qualify for college credit for specified technical courses within the Architecture, Civil Engineering Technology, or Construction Management associate degree programs.
  • The Electrical Trades Center of Columbus, Ohio, has a unique articulation agreement that links students in the Electrical Trades Apprenticeship Pathway to apprenticeships leading to union electrician journeyman status.  An additional agreement enables apprentices to earn an associate degree at Columbus State Community College at the same time.
